If you like packing that extra gear, traveling with kids, going on extended trips requiring summer and winter gear, or if your hobby on the road includes anything bulky like musical instruments, or a bread machine; the Back-Roller PRO Classic is what you need!

With the Back-Roller PRO Classic, Ortlieb offers the largest waterproof panniers on the market. With its 70L capacity, this pair of panniers will hold almost twice as much gear as its smaller brother, the world famous Back-Roller Classic - and only 13 extra ounces.

On top of extra volume, the Back-Roller Pro Classic features an additional handy and breathable 4L front pocket to store the damp shirt you just washed, snacks, or anything you need quick access to.

All fantastic features from the Back-Roller Classic remain on this PRO version:

The QL2.1 system allows quick and easy one-handed mounting and removal of the panniers on and off the rack. The QL2.1 System is also tool free adjustable, and your panniers will fit on virtually any rack with 16mm-diameter tubes and up. The lower hook of the QL2.1 system is anti-scratch in order to protect the finish of your rack from abrasion.

The Plus line offers the classy, more durable, and PVC Free, PS36C PU-laminated Cordura fabric.

Roll three times the Ortlieb Roll Closure, and your gear will be 100% protected from torrential rain, dust storm, blizzard, or whatever the environment will throw at you.

Riding before dusk or after dawn is safer with the long lasting and very bright reflectors located on both sides of the panniers.

Use the comfortable shoulder straps (two included) to pack your panniers nice and tight but also to carry your panniers on any day-trip on foot.

Inside each pannier is an integrated pocket to help organizie your gear, and the inside surface allows easy cleaning in case your left over pasta meal escapes its container!

The Ortlieb Rack Pack S or M can be combined with the Back-Roller Pro Panniers.

Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Review Field Test

Intro

The German manufacturer Ortlieb offers extremely durable panniers made of 100% waterproof materials. The most common models are the Front-Roller and the “Back-Roller” from the Classic line. I think 80% of bicycle travelers have this set-up: two Front-Rollers on the front rack, and 2 larger Back-Rollers on the rear rack. However many long distance travelers use Back-Roller on the rear rack as well as on the front rack for additional storage space. Ortlieb panniers are also fantastic for commuting. The Classic has more affordable panniers than the Plus line.

Most Ortlieb panniers are sold as a pairs. One back-roller classic pannier has a volume of 20 liter, so 40L per pair. The panniers weight almost 1kg each or 1900g for a pair.

Rolled at least three times, the pannier becomes 100% waterproof. I think the two main advantages of Ortlieb bags are that they are waterproof and extremely durable. As the name suggests, to close the bag you have to roll the top. When rolled at least three times, the pannier becomes 100% waterproof.

Durability over time

During my four-year around the world trip I used the same panniers the entire time. The first year or so they were absolutely waterproof. After that, the bottom started to wear out and tiny holes started to appear. This wearing off was most likely due to pressing the panniers down against the ground over and over while closing them. I advise to avoid closing the bags on gravels or rough terrain. However, even with these tiny holes, only under extremely heavy rain or while crossing rivers with the panniers partially submerged I found the bottom of my bags getting wet inside. Later, after years of heavy usage in hard condition, the panniers started to wear out where the hooks are attached.
