Vaccinations campers should be sure to receive
It's important to stay up to date on your immunizations, especially if you spend a lot of time in the backcountry. You never know what's out there and could find yourself having to deal with a difficult illness without the proper vaccinations. Luckily, staying on top of the traditional shots, such as tetanus, hepatitis and MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) is half of the battle. But here are some other diseases you should protect yourself against, just in case.
Depending on where you're going, you should make sure to vaccinate yourself against malaria. This mosquito-borne illness can become a huge problem if not properly treated. If you've recently been in a country with known malaria issues and develop a fever, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
It may also be worthwhile to vaccinate yourself against chickenpox. This is a highly communicable disease, and if you're planning on camping with children, you'll want to make sure they are properly protected against it.
In the end, as long as you're careful about receiving proper vaccinations and take necessary precautions when traveling, you should be able to come home happy and healthy without issue.
