How to start a fire with a magnesium block

If you're planning on spending time in the backcountry, one of the most important pieces of camping equipment you can bring with you is a reliable firestarter. You never know when you may find yourself caught in inclement weather and in need of warmth.

Magnesium blocks are easily found at most major camping supply stores and can make starting a fire very easy. If you've never used one before, here's a quick primer on how to do so.

All you need is a flint, a block and a napkin or bandana in which to collect shavings. Start by preparing a kindle - a small pile of leaves with an opening in the middle will do. Next, scrape flakes of magnesium onto your napkin or bandana, making sure they stay consolidated.

Pour the flakes into your kindling and flip the magnesium block around so that the blade side is facing you. Use your flint and create a spark by striking it against the blade. Note that magnesium burns hot and fast, so be ready for extra fuel and blow on the fire to add oxygen as needed.
