Holistic medicine for common backpacking injuries
Naturally, before heading out to the backcountry, you always want to make sure you have bandages, antibiotic gels and some painkillers. But have you thought about more natural methods of taking care of any injuries that may arise? You may be surprised at what's possible with holistic medicine.
Your stomach may not respond well to a sudden shift in diet, especially if you ramp up the fat and carbohydrate content to accommodate day-long hikes. However, there are a few things you can ingest that will help it settle. Peppermint, chamomile and ginger are frequently used for just that!
Yarrow is an herb that has been known to help accelerate the clotting process. Bring some along in a pouch - if you're injured, simple steep it in hot water for about five minutes and use the tea to wash out the wound. The dried herbs can also be directly applied for a similar effect.
You'll want to bring your first aid kit along, but a few holistic cures can help you recover from injuries in a more natural way.
