Everyday items that can be used for medical emergencie

It always helps to be prepared for whatever the backcountry can throw at you, but chances are, you can't anticipate every possible occurrence. At some point, you may find yourself having to deal with an injury or illness without proper medical equipment. While more often than not your first priority should be finding adequate treatment, in the meantime there are a few everyday items that you can use to ease symptoms.

For instance, honey is actually capable of killing bacteria. Bees produce a specific protein in the stuff that helps treat burns and skin infections. If you don't have any antibiotic ointment, a bit of honey can help keep infection at bay.

In a pinch, you can use duct tape to seal wounds. Use quarter-inch long strips to help close them. Be sure to punch a few holes into the tape before doing so, however, so that fluids can drain.

Fixes like these can help provide comfort and a bit of treatment while you find more adequate medical care.
