Choosing a bike computer
If you're interested in bike touring but don't feel like you're in proper shape yet, a bicycle computer (cyclometer) can do a lot to help improve your training regimen. There are plenty of options out there, so you need to know which device will work for you. Here are some things to consider when making a decision.
Cyclometer devices run the gamut, from simple models that provide only the most basic information to sophisticated pieces of machinery that can monitor your heart rate and help you keep pace with previous outings. There are even cyclometers designed to work with mountain and road bikes, which is great for those who enjoy casual romps and long-distance rides alike.
At the very least, you can expect even the most basic cyclometer to output data like average speed, current speed and maximum speed. The latter is particularly useful for racers who are trying to push themselves to the next level.
There are more advanced features as well, such as cadence, which measures the average number of pedal rotations you perform per minute. This can help you figure out the most efficient way to boost your speed. These days, you can easily find cyclometers that include a heart rate monitor, which can make it easier to figure out how hard you've been pushing yourself and adjust your training accordingly. You'd be surprised at how much further you can go if you have empirical data tracking your progress. If you're training for a triathalon or a similarly demanding event, having more data can never hurt. However, if you're planning on embarking on a less demanding tour, many of these features may be unnecessary.
The most recent innovation has been the inclusion of GPS. There are plenty of websites you can visit that will allow you to upload and download trip data, which can help you gauge yourself against other cyclists and find new routes to take in your neck of the woods. Other features like virtual racing and auto-lap timers can help give you more concrete goals to strive toward in your training.
