Boy Scout troop embarks on local history bike tour

Although it was a relatively short trip of about 15 miles, a Boy Scout troop from Costa Mesa, California, enjoyed a bit of bike touring on a Saturday afternoon. Five members of Troop 339 made their way to eight different historic sites, including the Santa Ana Army Base and a Native American village, according to the OC Register. They viewed century-old homes and rode through Newport Beach as well.

One stop that had an impact on the boys was a quick visit to the Estancia Adobe, which is the oldest building in Costa Mesa. In part, the tour helped commemorate the 50th anniversary of Troop 339, which was founded in 1962. It's also the first of what scoutmaster Peter Gruenbeck hopes will be a series of great events throughout the year.

Fifteen miles may seem like a paltry amount compared to serious bike tours, but it's the perfect distance for kids who may be interested in trying out long-distance cycling. It may even encourage a few of the scouts to start cycling more regularly.
